When I am in need of encouragement and grounding truth, I often turn to the Psalms. I’ve found that, many times, they put words to emotions I haven’t fully processed, offering me prayers and truths that I can repeat when I’m not sure what to say.
Recently, I was feeling especially tender toward some situations in my own life, and I felt a desire for God to just envelop me in Himself, to hide me from the noise of the world and all its troubles. Is this a feeling you can relate to? Maybe you’re experiencing it right now as you face unknowns, trials, or grief.
I imagine David felt similarly when he wrote Psalm 27. I highly encourage you to read the entire chapter, as he addresses the peril he was experiencing at the hands of his enemies. He felt surrounded on all sides—absolutely overcome. But even still, he clung to the truth of who God is. Verses 4-5 stuck out to me:
“The one thing I ask of the Lord—
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord’s perfections
and meditating in his Temple.
For he will conceal me there when troubles come;
He will hide me in his sanctuary.
He will place me out of reach on a high rock.” – Psalm 27:4-5 NLT
It is always such a comforting reminder for me to remember that the Lord is our sanctuary, a place of rest and safety. When we feel overwhelmed by the seas of life, He lifts us up on a high rock. He conceals us in His arms. We can heal in Him. We can breathe in Him. He longs for us to dwell with Him forever.
Today, there is a child somewhere in the world—at a Boaz-sponsored home, on the streets, in an institutional orphanage, experiencing war, or in a home that is unsafe—who is desperate to hear this truth. There is a Savior who covers His children in the shadow of His wings, concealing them from the darkness all around.
As we seek the Lord for safety and sanctuary amid our own struggles, may we remember the little ones whom Abba Father loves more than we can fathom. May we fervently pray for their salvation, that they may dwell in the house of the Lord for all of eternity.
I pray that you will also take a moment in all of the busyness today to take a deep breath and remember that, as a child of God, you are in good, safe hands. He will never, ever let you go.
